Merit, 2022
My dad was a Boy Scout before the war and again during his years of incarceration. The core accomplishments of the organization are merit badges, which require activity or experiences by scouts in particular areas of study. The accumulation of those badges leads to promotions in rank. Merit imagines badges earned by the life experiences of Japanese American scouts, and is paired with practical language from the Boy Scout guide, A Handbook for Boys (1943). The photograph below is from October, 1941 (Jimmy Miyazaki, center right). Photo by Tacoma News Tribune.
